  • Professor Paulo Artaxo, Professor in Physics at the University of São Paulo. Brazilian contributions to decarbonization and Paris Agreement Targets. Abstract: Brazil has many settlements to reduce GHG emissions, like eliminate deforestation until 2028 and reduce methane emissions in 30% until 2030. A discussion on Brazilian initiatives in energy, deforestation and agriculture as these are the most important emissions nowadays in the country.
  • Professor Paula Carvalho Pereda, Associate Professor in Economic at the University of São Paulo. Carbon market and welfare in the Brazilian economy – SDG 3 and 13. Abstract: How can we ensure access to energy and commodities needed for economic growth and human development without risking undermining the climate and environmental goals? A discussion on policies and initiatives to reduce Brazil’s footprint and on how to address the potential side effects on vulnerable populations.
  • Professor Sergio Pacca, Associate Professor at the School of Arts, Sciences and  Humanities at the University of São Paulo. The evolution of carbon balances and accounting that are fundamental for GHG inventories in countries like Brazil - SDG 3 and 15. Abstract: Considering that broadening the scope of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory is fundamental to mitigate climate change, modern accounting should go beyond territorial emissions and investigate repercussions along supply chains and carbon sinks that directly affect the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. New nature-engineering methods promote harvesting planted trees and burying them as long-lasting CO2 sinks and will be crucial to countries like Brazil, considering land use change and forestry.
  • Plinio Ribeiro. CEO, Biofilica. Opportunities for carbon market in Brazil. - SDG 13. Abstract: There are many ways to implement the carbon market. The idea is to show private sector initiatives in Brazil.
  • Roberto Waack, Arapyaú Institute Board President. The power of collaboration between civil society and public and private sectors for fostering nature based solution. - SDG 13 and 15 Abstract: Show opportunities of restoration as a solution for decarbonization of the country.

(REF 20541) “The Little Island that Could”: Creating a Better Future for Okinawa Through Partnership
RECORDING: “The Little Island that Could”: Creating a Better Future for Okinawa Through Partnership (Japanese only)

RECORDINGS: Japan-related playlist

***

Over four hundred organizations in Okinawa have partnered to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in Japan’s southern-most prefecture — and in a region with a vulnerable economy. The Okinawa SDGs Project, sponsored by the Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper, brings together more than 70 organizations, including media, municipalities, universities, large and small businesses, and not-for-profit organizations, to work on SDGs that affect Okinawa and that Okinawans are uniquely prepared to address.

Selected as a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Natural Heritage site, Okinawa’s rich nature and biodiversity is even more notable in that it coexists on a chain of islands with a population of 1.5 million people. Additionally, the sites of Shurijo Castle and the Gusuku Group, built during the Ryukyu Dynasty prior to Japanese rule, are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is this combination of thriving nature and rich culture that the partnership seeks to apply to the SDGs.

To create a sustainable region where nature and culture are balanced, the partnership brings together science, industry, and the understanding and cooperation of the local community. This presentation will share examples of ways Okinawans are addressing local carbon emissions, improving health, promoting employment and industry development, and improving the marine environment.

Presenters will share these initiatives in an effort to foster dialogue in Asia and the Pacific and to explore solutions to global environmental problems. All of the speakers’ activities are based on partnerships. The discussion will aim to raise awareness and motivation to achieve each of the SDG goals based on partnerships, which is unique to Okinawa, with its culture of “yuimaru” or mutual support.

NOTE: This session will be delivered in Japanese and simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English.

(REF 30280 - hybrid) Three Institutions Supporting Science and the SDGs
This panel will describe three representative science-based non-profit institutions supporting the Sustainable Development Goals using very different tools. Leaders from The Stimson Center in Washington DC, the STAR-TIDES global knowledge-sharing network at George Mason University, and the Kwajalein Atoll Sustainability Laboratory (KASL) in the Marshall Islands will describe their organization's charters and current research efforts.

While unique entities, each of the three uses science, engineering, the humanities, and indigenous perspectives to craft a planet-level understanding of the problems we face. Each then strives to build our human capacity for resilience with recognition of the value of ecosystem services to all species.

Using a participatory framework comprised of system science, indigenous collaboration, strategic policy development, and "applied hope," they each represent the range of global academic, industrial, and non-profit institutions using the full scope of human knowledge to achieve the SDGs. After brief presentations by each of the three organizations, the session will open to a wider audience discussion.
