In this session, we will discuss the key role that should play funding organisations in promoting innovative research programs focusing on reaching the overall objectives of the SDGs. A first step is to stimulate and increase awareness about the SDGs by all scientists and trainees. This is the main reason why in the most recent strategic plans (2022-2025) of the three main Quebec research funds, Fonds de recherche du Québec Nature et Technologies (FRQNT), Fonds de recherche du Québec Santé (FRQS) & Fonds de Recherche Société et Culture (FRQSC), increased knowledge about the various SDGs are promoted in all our programs even if a first glance a given project of training program may seem to have limited relevance or impact for most of the SDGs.
Increased awareness is a key step that will hopefully lead to stronger engagement of members of the FRQ funded community toward helping to reach the challenging goals set by the UN. While some members of the academic community are concerned stating that this may hamper and limit academic freedom, we strongly believe that raising awareness about the SDGs in the scientific community is one of the only ways to ensure success in reaching their ambitious goals by proposing truly innovative, ambitious projects.
Strong engagement at all levels of the global scientific community is also essential in order to deliver truly effective science advice to high level policy makers and elected officials, and to engage our fellow citizens as key partners if we truly aspire to reach the objectives of all UN SDGs. Other speakers from academia and government will expand on the role of funding organizations like the FRQ in addressing SDGs.
