Introduction

Infrastructure is one of the key components of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Careful planning, designing, implementation, and operation of the infrastructures are necessary to create a sustainable infrastructure and to achieve target economic, social, and environmental goals within the framework of the sustainable development goals.
The aim of this symposium is to bring together the academic and policy-making community to exchange knowledge and insights regarding the roles that infrastructure can play in catalyzing sustainable development. The symposium will showcase state-of-the-art research carried out globally focusing on the impact of infrastructure on sustainable development, both for primary access to infrastructure services as well as more sophisticated infrastructure.

Abstract

Infrastructures form the backbone of every society. Infrastructure systems provide essential services such as energy, water, waste management, transport, and telecommunications. The infrastructures are sustainable if they ensure economic, social, environmental, and institutional sustainability throughout the life cycle. In middle eastern countries, investment in infrastructure is at an all-time high. This also means that a large number of decisions are being made now that will affect the patterns of development for future generations. It is worth noting that infrastructure can also create harmful social and environmental impacts, increase vulnerability to natural disasters and leave an unsustainable burden of debt. Interestingly, these infrastructure investments are intended to increase economic prosperity and employment. It is possible to achieve the necessary economic, social, and environmental results within the framework of the sustainable development goals by the creation and use of sustainable infrastructure.
The talk in the symposium will cover the following topic, but not limited to only these:
• Sustainable Energy System's Requirements to Face the Global Energy Transition
• Adaptive pathways for resilient infrastructure
• Smart city and sustainable development
• Design of resilient road infrastructure
• Asset Maintenance
• Asset management of infrastructures
• Digital Infrastructure and sustainable development
• Transportation network and Road infrastructure.

Expected Outcomes

The symposium is expected to have the following outcomes:
• Dissemination of state-of-the-art research in sustainable and resilient infrastructures
• Will help to understand the best practices and policies across the world to aid sustainable infrastructure design and development
• Develop a white paper for sustainable infrastructure
• Develop a framework for infrastructure asset management
