SESSION ABSTRACT
The search for active compounds in biodiversity – known as bioprospecting – has diminished in recent years due to several reasons. For example, the advent of biologicals from biotechnology and the increase in the capacity of synthesis of new compounds using combinatorial chemistry have risen as alternatives of obtaining new chemical entities.
Certain intrinsic problems that are directly related to bioprospecting have also undermined this activity, including regulation issues, weak institutions in regions of interest, difficulty of access to genetic resources due to poor infrastructure, and poor risk pricing. Bioprospecting is also considered a process that is often too long and has little guarantee of success.
The present session aims to discuss the present and future of bioprospecting in Latin America, in particular regarding the exploration of innovative models for accessing biodiversity.
