Country Strategic Context:
Sudan is characterised by diversity in population structure, ethnic groups, ecosystems, habitats, natural resources and agro-regions, and freshwater and marine ecosystems. The ecological zones from north to south that include Desert, Semi-desert, Woodland Savanna, Flood region and Mountain vegetation shape the traditional population's agricultural and economic activities and social fabrics and culture. Being in the central dryland of North-East Africa, the country is highly stressed by the global environmental issues of climate change, desertification, and loss of biodiversity. These problems are confounded and aggravated by economic problems, climate vulnerability, environmental degradation, management of natural resources, displaced people, and refugees from neighbouring countries.

In the past few years, the country has witnessed significant political, economic and social changes and challenges with great impacts on attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is among the low-income category in 2020, ranked 168th of 189 countries on the Human Development Index (2019) and ranked 140th of 159 countries in the UNDP Gender Inequality Index. Young people constitute 23 per cent of the total population, and 55 per cent are poor. In addition, it is rated 112th of 119 countries in the Global Hunger Index for 2019, indicating fragile food and nutrition security and widespread undernourishment. Civil wars and famine in neighbouring countries of South Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia have caused many refugees to seek safety in Sudan, putting pressure on already strained resources, especially in Border States.

Internal conflicts often occur between tribes over access to natural resources. COVID-19 and health issues have accelerated impacts on the economy, health and production of field crops cultivated by small-scale farmers.

Sudanese economy is highly dependent on agriculture, which employs 43 per cent of the labour force and 34 per cent of GDP. Although the sector operates below potential, a diverse range of raw material crops are exported, including cotton, sesame, gum Arabic, groundnuts, sorghum, hibiscus, melon seeds and livestock. The traditional rainfed sector covers about 9 million hectares and includes the poorest and most vulnerable farmers. Yields are low and vulnerable to climate change. Postharvest processing and value addition are far below potential. Contrary to the situation of rainfed agriculture, access to water resources from the Nile River for irrigation enables intensive agriculture and better access to rural finance, input and extension services.

Highlights of Sudan presentation:

The scientific research and studies in Sudan address the country’s national development plan and response mechanisms. Under the above conditions, challenges and limited resources, the scientific community at the research centres and universities have conducted scientific research and studies for the advancement of science that is directly linked to attaining the SDGs. Considerable research was conducted and is currently underway in the field of agriculture, forestry and livestock and food security and safety in terms of cultural operations, production aspects and genetic resources. In addition, environmental and sustainable management of natural resources was high on the research agenda. Health and preventative measures are the focus of medical research. Water management, harvesting and treatment are high in the research agenda. Gender and social safeguards have received considerable attention and focus with significant progress as related to the SDGs.Accordingly, Sudan’s presentation will touch on the scientific contributions toward the SDGs on the following research areas:
