Transdisciplinary is a reflective research process that brings together diverse perspectives from different academic disciplines and non-academic collaborators (e.g. practitioners, indigenous and local communities, resource managers, etc.) to co-create research goals for a holistic understanding of the issues and develop novel solutions. Addressing the complexity of global environmental change requires effective communication and collaboration among scientists, decision-makers, and affected communities across the region. The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) promotes international cooperation, full and open exchange of scientific information, and the development of transdisciplinary capacities across the science-policy interface to support the vision of a sustainable Americas. In the last 30 years, the IAI has transitioned from an interdisciplinary research agenda to address global change issues, towards one based on a transdisciplinary approach targeting the science-policy-interface. This session will present the key tenets of IAI´s transdisciplinary approach, its challenges and opportunities, and first-hand experiences of knowledge co-production supported by the IAI Science Program.
