Climate change and the associated climate risk severely impacts billions of smallholder famers around the world. Financial instruments such as index insurance have been proposed as tools to help farmers adapt to climate by transferring risk and incentivizing climate smart agriculture and agricultural ecosystems services. As these projects reach millions of farmers, it is increasingly important to discuss what is necessary for them to be successful, and in what cases they may be harmful. This session will provide a range of perspectives on issues involved in the relationship between climate, insurance, climate smart agriculture, and ecosystems services.
