Located in subtropical South America, the Argentine Gran Chaco is a bioculturally rich region, and one of the largest remnant tracts of dry forests globally. However, in the last two decades it has become a major global hotspot of deforestation driven by agricultural expansion for commodity production. Science and policy stakeholders as well as social-environmental movements strive to find a sustainable balance among environmental conservation, human well-being and economic development. In this session, Argentine researchers will present the main challenges and opportunities to steer Chaco social-ecological systems towards sustainability.
